I spent an entire Saturday on it, and literally emptied every cabinet, drawer & shelf of his into a big pile on the (pre-cleaned) floor hen added all my crap too. After the initial purge, I was able to categorize everything. It was a HUGE undertaking and really only worked because we had a large open floor space.
